Teachers Supporting Teachers

Since starting this business in 2020 my hope and vision has always been to give back to Cambodian Children’s Fund (CCF). I am in a profession that I absolutely love and I believe I have CCF to thank, as volunteering in 2016 inspired me to become the teacher I am today.

Volunteering in Cambodia…

In 2016 during the University holidays I spent three months volunteering as a teacher aide at a school serving the community that lived on and around one of Phnom Penh’s biggest rubbish dumps. During this time I was completely inspired by the incredible work CCF is doing in order to help break the cycle of poverty. They are transforming the lives of the most impoverished, marginalised and neglected children in Cambodia through high quality education, leadership training and direct support programs.

We raised $5,000 to support a local teacher…

Once I returned home, I began my studies to become a high school teacher. I then returned to Cambodia in 2019 after spending some time fun raising with friends. We were able to raise over $5,000 AUD for CCF and chose to donate these funds were to support and fund a local Cambodian teachers wage.

A case study of Chemistry Subject Leader - Mr. Thou Chanphirum

My name is Thou Chanphirum. I am from Kandal Kandal province. In 2008, I graduated from the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) majoring in chemistry study. At the same time of pursuing my bachelor degree; I was also attending the secondary pedagogy training for one year. After graduated, I taught Chemistry for grade 7-9 at Kandal province. In 2009, I went to the National Institute of Education (NIE) for Chemistry Pedagogy to teach in upper secondary. In 2010, I started to teach Chemistry to grade 10-12. I believe that learning is never ended, so I enrolled for a master's degree in Chemistry; I graduated in 2015. I’ve been working at CCF since 2018, firstly as a Chemistry Teacher and currently I am a Chemistry Subject Leader at the Neeson Cripps Academy (NCA).

As a subject leader, I am responsible for leading and guiding a group of 5-6 chemistry teachers to provide advanced knowledge and skills in chemistry and research in order to strengthen the teaching of chemistry to students. I am so excited to be a Chemistry Subject Leader. I am eager to share my experiences and knowledge to the team and students for the upcoming academic 2019-2020.

I wish I could organise a Chemistry Fair for our students. This chemistry fair will be a great opportunity for students to display their work through the year, a good way to encourage and engage them in education. Another wish of mine is to conduct regular classroom observations, either formal or informal observation of teaching typically conducted by our team members. This is to provide my team members with constructive feedback for improvement. Moreover, I am planning to have a regular meeting for all subject team leaders as this is a good way to learn and share new initiative ideas to each other. Lastly, I am going to conduct a regular weekly team meeting in order to learn from each other, both challenges and solutions.

For my personal development, I want to attend English class at ACE. This will be really helpful and a lot easier for me to research on my chemistry subject on the internet for my students. Another plan is to attend chemistry training, which I can advance my skill to be more effective and efficient.
